To be perfectly Frank
Posted Date: 24 April 2012
“Sculpture is a sadly neglected art, and considerable courage is required of anyone who wants to practice it. That courage, coupled with an equally strong belief in the validity of her art, Hannah Frank has in generous measure" – Frank Wordsall, 1988
Perhaps best known for her hauntingly beautiful black and white drawings, Hannah Frank was not only a prolific illustrator but an equally gifted sculptor. Born in Glasgow in 1908, Frank studied at Glasgow University and the Glasgow School of Art. Developing her sculptural practice after her graduation from the GSA, Frank continued to produce sculptures until 2000. Unlike her striking and bold illustrations, these sculptural works feature rounded lines and soft surfaces conveying a unique sense of intimacy and softness. Held in private collections around the work, Hannah Frank’s work is popular and much admired. This month McTear’s proudly presents four of Frank’s strongest sculptures.
