RARE DRAM PROVES THAT GOOD THINGS COME IN SMALL PACKAGES

Whisky lovers from across the world will have their eyes on Glasgow next week as one of the world’s rarest half bottles goes under the hammer.
The 1927 bottle of Springbank is the star attraction in the McTear’s Winter Rare Whisky Sale on 3rd February and is expected to fetch between £4000 and £6000.
The rare dram, which was distilled by J. & A. Mitchell & Co. Ltd in 1900 and drawn in 1927, is one of 500 lots in the sale.
“You don’t find too many half bottles coming to auction but it is very rare indeed to find one of this quality,” says McTear’s whisky specialist Andrew Bell. “Springbank is an extremely collectable whisky and I am sure there will be a lot of interest in this outstanding example.”

Amongst the other lots going under the hammer will be a 1964 Bowmore with a price of between £3200 and £4000, a 1938 Macallan which could fetch up to £1600 and a 20 year old Caol Ila which was produced to mark the distillery’s 150th anniversary and has an estimate of £1000 to £1400.
All the big name distilleries will be represented in the auction with other fine examples of The Macallan, The Dalmore, Talisker, Highland Park and Bowmore going under the hammer. There will also be a selection of more unusual bottlings including a 37 year old Famous Grouse Robert Burns edition which was limited to 250 bottles and has a price tag of £450-£500.
Andrew Bell adds: “McTears has a reputation for selling some of the finest whiskies in the world and looking at the quality of the various lots going under the hammer in February I have no doubt this reputation will remain intact.”

McTear’s Rare and Collectible whisky sale is held quarterly in Glasgow. In August 2009 a 50 year old bottle of Macallan sold for £11,750 while earlier in the year a rare 1919 miniature of Springbank made a world record price of £1,800.
